CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

What is Ability Gives?

Ability Gives is the equipment grant program of Ability Online, started in the Spring of 2012 with the generous support from the Pollack Family.

Ability Gives is dedicated to helping families acquire necessary equipment and aids for children (under 18 years of age) with a disability or a complex medical condition.

We have given the gift of independence to more than 200 children to date, valued at over $450,000!

Why is Ability Gives Important?

Having a child with a disability brings a unique set of challenges to a family’s life. From learning how to manage their health needs to wanting to help them achieve their personal best, it’s a 24/7 undertaking!
And then you add in all the “extras”, the adapted equipment, specialized seating, writing aids, etc., that quickly drain often limited financial resources. It is that drain that commonly prevents many children from getting the equipment they need. We need to help these families because they can’t do it alone!

You can help change a life today!
We want to bridge that financial gap and turn the impossible into possible! You can help us build that bridge. Click here to contribute to Ability Gives!

You can of course also donate to the general operating fund of Ability Online and help provide a safe, bully-free monitored online environment for children and young adults with disabilities. Click on the logo below, it’s quick and easy.

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto is the only facility in Canada dedicated to serving elder homeless men age 50+.

Our onsite library has room for books. Share your love of reading with our clients.

Drop off books any day between 9am and 4pm at 170 Jarvis Street in Toronto, or donate online towards the purchase of books.

Elder homeless men cannot afford simple necessities like shampoo, toothpaste, socks or shoes. When you Shop & Share in our online store, you help ensure more basics for more people.

There’s something for every size budget there, and the best part is that there’s no middleman – anything you purchase goes directly to an elder homeless man in need.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

SHOWS

Several of Louis’ past shows and movies have been in the news lately.

Stargate Universe

The Companion has published an essay about Louis’ character. Read the whole article here. Thanks to Gene S. for the link!

Colonel Everett Young (Louis Ferreira) was the military commander onboard the Ancient starship Destiny in Stargate Universe. Unfortunately for Young, not everyone on board Destiny was in the military. If Young was going to lead the crew of Destiny home, he was going to have to adapt his command style.

Stargate Universe Reboot

Sadly, no, there’s no reboot, at least not yet. But people are talking about it, and various news outlets have picked up an interview with Robert Carlyle and Brian J. Smith about the topic.

From bleedingcool.com:
Stargate Universe stars Robert Carlyle and Brain J. Smith discussed being open to revisiting the SYFY series, 12 years after the series ended.

From Syfy.com:
A Decade Later, Stargate Universe Stars Still Down For Revival of SYFY’s SG-1 Spinoff. The crew of Destiny is still out there in space, waiting for another adventure.

Everything Put Together

The Sundance Festival website has useful recommendations for watching certain movies before heading to the festival to watch the movies there: Get Acquainted With This Summer’s Filmmakers Through These 13 Sundance Films:

“Before you see White Bird… watch Everything Put Together.
When a young couple (Radha Mitchell and Louis Ferreira) face a devastating loss, their friends feel so uncertain about how to respond that they desert them. ‘A searing parable of human frailty and isolation, the film probes the impact of an unexpected tragedy on a community homogenized in mini-vanned, manicured affluence,‘ writes Rebecca Yeldham in the 2000 Festival Program Guide.” Watch it here!

Dawn of the Dead

The classic 2004 Zombie movie remake has been remastered in a Collector’s Edition in 4K UHD. The new release sits in a black case alongside two 1080p Blu-rays containing both the theatrical and unrated versions. The insert and slipcover feature the original US theatrical artwork. Extra features, which are primarily upscaled SD and HD, are included on each disc. Check the list here, and read the review!

Purchase the new collector’s edition here.

SCREEN CAPS

This month we have 287 screen caps of episode 105 of Durham County. In Dark Man, Ray Prager (Louis Ferreira) gets close to Audrey Sweeney so he can manipulate Mike Sweeney’s family. Mike and Audrey reach a boiling point while she staunchly defends Ray. Our friend Greyston Holt also stars as Ray Prager Jr.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!   by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

To speed up loading times of these image- and media-heavy pages the second half of this book will continue on a new page.

said Bill.

“So have I,” answered Jim.
Let’s get up closer. I want to have
a good look.”

On older article Mika wrote in 2019 about an upcycled instrument tied to an auspicious accelerator has recently resurfaced in Symmetry, an online publication covering particle physics.
Composer Hainbach has reposted the story in conjunction with drum loops he created with the machine .

A composer has given new life to an amplifier used within a historically significant particle accelerator. SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she contributes a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

Peanut butter stuffed dates covered in oat milk chocolate ganache

“I am currently living in the date capital of the world where the dates are so fresh they literally melt in your mouth and are as soft as butter. They are fantastic on their own but I couldn’t resist turning them into this sweet peanut butter chocolate heaven. Yummm.”

  1. Immediately remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the milk over the chopped chocolate. Rotate the bowl so the chocolate is completely submerged. Cover the bowl with a plate and let stand undisturbed for 4-5 minutes.
  2. Remove the plate and whisk the chocolate into the milk from the centre out, whisking until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
  3. Keep the bowl of ganache at room temperature. Test the consistency by pouring a tsp of ganache into a small ramekin and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  4. After chilling, the ganache should be smooth and firm, but still creamy on the palate. If the glaze is too firm, add a tbsp of room temperature non dairy milk and repeat the test. If it’s too thin, melt some chocolate and whisk in, repeating the test.
  5. Once you are happy with the final consistency, add the vanilla and whisk.
  6. Remove the top of the date, slice into the middle of the date and remove the pit. Add your peanut butter and then dip it into the chocolate ganache. Sprinkle some flaked sea salt.
  7. Place dates into the fridge to set. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 15 Medjool dates
  • Peanut butter right from the jar
  • Pinches of Flaked sea salt
  • 4oz vegan Dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Silk Oat milk
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla extract

Method:

  1. Finely chop your chocolate and place into a heatproof bowl and set aside.
  2. Pour your oat milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium, bring to a low boil.
