Welcome to another Birthday Edition of our monthly Ferreira Fest gathering! We celebrate Louis’ birthday and check in with our charities and friends. In addition, we have our exclusive Reading Series, a new recipe from Jackie, photos, screen caps, shows news and so much more! Grab a wedge of virtual birthday cake or a donut and come on in!

THE 2024 BIRTHDAY PROJECT

We have fulfilled our pledge to gather 1000 birthday wishes for Louis this year! With our sponsorship of $.10 for every wish this adds up to exactly $100 (about CDN $135) which will be donated to Haven Toronto on Louis’ birthday. Thanks to Cindy for sponsoring the project and to everyone who participated!

We managed to cover two lawn bags with flower-embellished wishes for the “Lawn Bag to Lunch Bag” challenge, and two bags with quilt pattern decorated wishes for the “Lawn Bag to Sleeping Bag” challenge. There were enough stickers to even cover the bottom of two of the bags!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LOUIS!

Haven Toronto

Toronto is currently experiencing several extreme cold weather alerts. Haven Toronto is providing important supports to its elder, homeless members during these frigid, dangerous days.

How Haven Toronto Is Helping:
Haven’s day center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, where we provide a warm, safe place for registered members (homeless men 50 and over) to spend the day and access free healthy meals and a variety of warm clothing they may need.
We also offer several social programs (library, computers, games, TV) and provide access to onsite medical support to monitor frostbite and other health-related issues. We can provide this critical support because of contributions from generous individuals, corporations, foundations, and community-based donors. Thank you!

How Can You Help?
If you happen upon a homeless person in your neighborhood, you can provide them with a warm blanket, make sure they are not in immediate danger, offer to take them to an emergency warming center, or, if necessary, contact the police to seek more urgent help that they may require.

Let’s all do our part to help those in need during these frigid days.

You can also help by giving to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

As we celebrate Black History Month at The Children’s Aid Foundation with this year’s theme “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build,” we’re sharing stories from former youth in care, and highlighting Black-focused programs and ongoing efforts to create a more equitable future for Black and Black-Biracial youth involved in the child welfare system.

By the Numbers:

Click the block above to learn more!

Black children and youth are significantly overrepresented in the child welfare system for a myriad of reasons including systemic racism, poverty and intergenerational trauma. Data from the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto shows that African-Caribbean Canadians are overrepresented in care at five times their representation in the population. African-Caribbean Canadians represent 41% of children and youth in care, despite making up only 8% of the population in Toronto. In Ontario, Black children make up just 7% of the overall child population yet represent 13.9% of children living in government care.

In 2020, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada made it a strategic priority to address this overrepresentation. Together, alongside partners, allies, donors and advocates, we’re aiming to reduce the number of Black children and youth entering care, increase high school graduation rates and help youth transitioning out of care live meaningful, independent lives.

You can help by donating – every penny helps and will make a difference! Simply click on the logo below and follow the instructions.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book here

Here is this month’s chapter.

Chapter 43: Georgie Giraffe (continued)

Mr. G. thought and then told Georgie,
“You know, Georgie, you can’t change like that.
Your long legs are for running fast.
You can outrun the tiger, the bear,
and the elephant.
With your long neck you can look
away out and up and see things.
Little animals can’t see what you do.”

“Think about that, Georgie.
You are a giraffe.
So you should be a good one.
You won’t be happy trying to be
something you’re not.
You’ll have to change your thinking,
Georgie. You can’t change
what you look like.”

Georgie thought about what Mr. G.
had told him.

This is a workplace comedy we’ve never seen before, complete with dirty jokes and the biggest wet dream of an ensemble of actors rooted by kick ass numero uno Robb Wells . And no one else could have led us through block-shooting-8-episodes-all-at-once-in-2-months-with-10-hour-camera-days better than Warren P. Sonoda. What a champion. SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she contributes a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

Gluten Free Vegan Vanilla Mini Donuts

“For all you donut lovers, I know how hard it is to find GF/ Vegan donuts out there. Try making your own homemade fluffy and delicious little minis. Yummm! Happy baking, friends!”

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups gluten-free Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Flour
1/3 cup organic cane sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup unsweetened dairy-free milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375F. In a large bowl, whisk, measure and sift the gluten-free flour, cane sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together.
  2. Add the vanilla extract, apple cider vinegar, dairy-free milk, and vegetable oil. Whisk together until smooth.

3. Prepare a mini donut pan by spraying it with cooking oil or coconut oil.

4. Spoon the donut mixture into the donut pan, being careful not to overfill them. If you have extra batter, you can fill up a few silicone baking cups for a couple of mini cakes to bake alongside the donuts.

5. Place the donut pan in the oven and bake for 10 to 13 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when a toothpick comes out clean when inserted.

6. After the donuts have cooled about a minute, transfer them to cool completely on a wire rack.

7. Melt some vegan dark chocolate and or white chocolate for the glaze. I added some pink pataya to the white chocolate for the pink color.

8. After the donuts have cooled, dip them in the chocolate and transfer to a wire rack.

9. Enjoy your donuts as is or decorate them with sprinkles, shredded or flaked coconut, or colored sugar.

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. And if you find yourself in Vancouver visit her studio and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:

“Talking about storms! We have just had two in a row, and if you know us in Vancouver we don’t fair well with any sub zero temperatures along with precipitation. Lots of snow and frozen roads here. Disruption to many services and institutions. But for me – I am so-called essential and had to brave the storms to make it to work!”

“I have not been doing anything yet but I asked [my daughter] Gala to submit something as she is only doing artwork now in her school. She sent this with no title but it’s cute and I thought you’d like it.
Take care and talk again soon,
Nicole”
