Ability Gives, the equipment fundraising arm of Ability Online is still sponsoring Lamitta – you can read about her here and make a donation towards her much-needed special equipment.

Of course you can always make a contribution to help with general operating expenses and special programs by clicking on the logo below – it’s easy and secure and your donation is tax-deductible to the extent of your area’s laws.

Haven Toronto

You often hear staff say that food is a gateway at Haven Toronto. This has been the case since the day we opened almost 90 years ago. Clients come for a nutritious, hot meal prepared in-house and while they are here they access health and housing supports and socialize with peers.
As poverty and homelessness grow in the province, we are seeing more and more new faces of elder men. In August, new clients increased by 152% compared to the same time period pre-pandemic. We saw the spike start in June with a 163% increase. We expect these numbers to continue into and throughout 2023.

As Fall turns to winter many unhoused people find themselves unprepared for the rapidly dropping temperatures. You can help by purchasing a Weather-Ready kit at Haven Toronto’s Shop & Share Site: anything you purchase there goes directly to an elder homeless man in need – no middle man or paperwork required. It doesn’t get any easier than that to support this great cause and it has immediate tangible results.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Are you a young person who has experienced the child welfare system? Or a social worker in the child welfare sector? Check out Fostering Community, a platform of curated resources for Canada’s youth in and from care community! Fostering Community offers youth the ability to independently access information about finances, education, employment, housing, and more.
Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is focused on improving the lives of youth in and from care, which includes providing access to resources and information that address youth’s current needs. September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honor the Indigenous children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada deeply values the importance of this day and what it means, particularly to the Indigenous children, youth, and families we serve.

We continue to recognize the need for our organization to become more actively engaged and educated about how Canada’s devastating history of racism and enduring systemic practices continue to negatively and severely traumatize and marginalize Indigenous populations to this day.

As a result of systemic racism, poverty and intergenerational trauma rooted in Canada’s history of colonialism, Indigenous youth are dramatically overrepresented in the child welfare system. Over 52% of foster children in Canada are Indigenous, even though Indigenous children account for only 7.7% of the child population in Canada. In 2020, we released a strategic framework, which includes addressing the issue of overrepresentation of Indigenous children and youth in the child welfare system as a key priority.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!   by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 27: Lost! – A Dog! Part 1 (continued)

To be continued next month!

Pat cried when he told Cathy
about Mr. Mugs. He told his friends
about his lost dog.
They looked and looked, up the street and down.

“Did you see Mr. Mugs?”
“No, I didn’t.”

“Did you see Pat’s dog?
He’s lost.”
“No – I don’t think so.”

“Did you see a dog
about this big? He’s ours.
We can’t find him.”
“Sorry! No lost dogs
around here.”

They didn’t find him! He was lost!

Best,
-Justin”

Congratulations, Justin! They are so lucky to have you on set!

Logline:
The world of “The Power” is our world, but for one twist of nature. Suddenly, and without warning, all teenage girls in the world develop the power to electrocute people at will. It’s hereditary, it’s inbuilt, and it can’t be taken away from them. Coming alive to the thrill of pure power: the ability to hurt or even kill by releasing electrical jolts from their fingertips, they rapidly learn they can awaken the Power in older women. Soon enough nearly every woman in the world can do it. And then everything is different.

Greyston Holt

Greyston has been at it again – in addition to being a great actor he’s also a very talented photographer, and one of his favorite subjects is the natural beauty of his home on Salt Spring Island near Vancouver, BC.

Eugene Lipinski

Our friend (and Louis’ BFF) Eugene is starring in the upcoming Lifetime movie An Amish Sin. Don’t miss it on October 29 at 8/ 7c,and you can stream it starting October 30. Incidentally, our friend Troy Mundle also appears in the film! Watch the trailer in Troy’s rubric!

Click on the screen cap for more movie info.

Logline – An Amish Sin
The Amish world has always fascinated outsiders with its insular community and 18th century lifestyle that shuns the temptations of modernity. But all is not as wholesome as it seems. Inspired by true stories, Amish Sin follows Rachel, an Amish teen who refuses to obey her parent’s command that she marry the man who abused her as a child. When she attempts to run away, she is caught and sent to a “rehab” for Amish girls who don’t follow the rules. Managing to escape from the facility, she makes her way to a neighboring city where she has to learn to live – and find her place – in our world.

Bradley Stryker

“People often ask me, “When you going to play the good guy?” Well, today is the day on Lifetime!”
Yes, Bradley is not playing some sleazy dude for a change! The movie Let’s Get Physical premiered on October 15. Watch the trailer here.

Bradley’s recent movie Crawlspace is now available on VOD. He had some fun making this one, and now you can stream it on Showtime. Enjoy the wild ride!
Logline:
After witnessing a brutal murder in a cabin, a man hides in a crawlspace while the killers scour the property for a hidden fortune. As they draw nearer, he must decide if the crawlspace will be his tomb or the battleground in his fight for survival.

Bradley has been filming an episode of the drama series FBI. He writes:
“Filming in NYC! FBI: Into the Fire. NYC in the Fall to get busy doing what I love… don’t mind if I do.”

“New York, the forever adventure. 4am call times; filming in the city; filming upstate; subway music; street art; fancy trailers/ hotels; closet sized apartments; incredible food at all turns… you best bring your sense of adventure!”

Bradley’s recent project Devil in Ohio got a fabulous write-up in the Seattle Times. Here is a short quote from Bradley about his character:

“I did all this research. I looked at pictures of the actual people that could have inspired [Sheriff Wilkins]. There’s no one smiling. I knew I had to have just enough charm to be able to get away with what he does,” Stryker said about his latest character. “But he couldn’t just go around being stern and angry. He had to go around in a way that wouldn’t always raise alarms,” the actor said of Wilkins. “That was a high-wire walk that I had to balance. It was really fun to do.”

Read the full essay here, or click on the screenshot of the article.

And finally, Bradley’s own newest movie is out!

Sheltering Season stars Caitlin Stryker and our friend Patrick Gilmore!

VOD lives here.
Watch the trailer here.

“I’m beyond excited to share with you all my latest film as a writer/director. Sheltering Season is releasing this Friday, October 14th, to theaters in selected cities and day-and-date with VOD. Wildly grateful to collaborate with so many talented individuals.”

SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend (and frequent Louis photo supplier) Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she will contribute a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

Roasted Vegetable Salad Bowl

I made this delicious roasted vegetable salad dish for my friend Chris Shyer who hired me to personal chef for him last week. This bowl is loaded with all the right nutrients to help him fuel his day! Enjoy!

Ingredients: (3 servings)
Mixed greens of choice
1 cup Cucumber, diced
1/2 cup Grape tomatoes, sliced
5 Strawberries, sliced
Mixed salad nuts
3 Beets, steamed whole with peel
1 large red onion, chopped in 6 wedges
1 medium size sweet potato, diced
2 cups mushrooms, sliced
1 bag of Brussel Sprouts
Grapeseed oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Garlic and herb seasoning
Dried herbs- Basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, thyme
Dressing- Balsamic vinegar, olive oil, dijon mustard, maple syrup to taste.

Method:

  • Wash and chop/dice all of your veggies.
  • Preheat your oven to 400F. Line two roasting pans with parchment paper.
  • Heat your air fryer on the potato setting.
  • Using a double boiler, heat some water to a boil. Once boiling, add your beets and cover for 30 minutes.
  • In separate bows, add your Brussel sprouts, sweet potato, mushrooms and onions. Drizzle a touch of oil into each bowl and then sprinkle spices, herbs and seasonings of choice. Mix to combine.
  • Add your sweet potato into the air fryer basket and set to 25 minutes. Check on basket after 10 mins and toss.
  • Add your Brussels, onion, mushrooms to the two prepared pans. Do not crowd the pans. Pop into the oven and set a timer for 30 mins. Check veggies after 15 mins and toss.
  • Check on your beets, make sure the water has not evaporated, if so add more. Turn beets over and check for doneness with a toothpick. Cover and continue to steam if not soft all the way through. When done, let cool and then take a few paper towels and gently rub to remove the peel. It should come off fairly easily. Chop beets in cubes or wedges.
  • While the veggies are all cooking, prepare your bowls and mix your dressing.
  • Add the mixed greens, cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries and mixed nuts. Set aside.
  • Once your veggies are air fried, roasted and steamed, add them to the bowls and drizzle dressing. Enjoy!
