The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is our country’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth and families involved in the child welfare system.

In honor of World Social Work Day, we interviewed Kevin Yarde, a social worker and Supervisor of the TO Investigation Multi-Service Team at the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CAST). We had a far-reaching discussion covering everything from the role of social workers, anti-Black racism and his previous work as Anti-Black Racism Practice Integration Lead, and diversity. June marks 23 years since Kevin joined the team at CAST and feels a responsibility to do the work in a way that honors and acknowledges the strengths of the children, youth, and families they serve.

SCREEN CAPS

This month we have 807 screen caps from the sitcom series Hidden Hills – one of Louis’ personal favorites. Louis plays harried suburban family man Doug Barber.
In episode 105 The Getaway, Doug plans a romantic getaway weekend with his wife Janine, but they discover five other couples from Hidden Hills are at the same resort. Of course, misunderstandings and hilarity ensue.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!   by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 33: Lost! – A Dog! Part 2 (continued)

… to be continued next month!

Mother and Daddy heard the cans.

They heard the boys laughing.
“What on earth was that!” shouted Daddy.
“What’s wrong out there?”

“Nothing!” Pat shouted back.
“Mr. Mugs is home! HERE HE IS!”

“Look, boys,” called Mother.
“How about sleeping in the house tonight? I think there’s room for about three boys and one dog!”

“That sounds good to me!” laughed Pat.

Ingrid Rogers

Ingrid has been busy remodeling her new house and discovering how much she loves the process.

“Transitions of life…
They can be beautiful and joyful and exhilarating and they can be challenging and rough and messy. That’s life and living.
There’s a peace that comes with being willing to experience it all with the intention to live above the turbulence and make something beautiful rather than slide into the b.s. I’ve found that the roughest experiences are often exquisitely transformative. Mindset and intention are everything.
The physical transformations of this house are reflective of my recent life changes. Click to see the before and after of this staircase.
Walls came down and things got wild and unwieldy and then this beautiful, sturdy oak staircase emerged.
It’s never too late to transform.
It’s never too late to create.
And it‘s definitely never too late to start living.”

“Are you just existing or really living?

Did you know there’s an art to living? I truly believe there is and I decided to tap into that flow and see where it takes me. I don’t totally know what this means yet but it includes beauty, creativity and connection; aesthetics, purpose and expression.

The renovation of this house is my transition to a new way of living and the backdrop for an exciting new adventure.
I hope you’ll join me in discovering the beauty of life and the art of living.”

Rob Munic

Rob shared a story from his early career – click on one of the screen shots to watch the whole video.

“So 35 years ago my first agent called and said I had an audition for a new director who was shooting a @levis 501 campaign. If I booked it – it would get my SAG card. So I go on the audition and end up booking the spot. On the day the director wanted my head to almost hit the ceiling – he kept on encouraging me to go “ HIGHER. HIGHER”. The bed was rigged to bust apart. Didn’t have real springs – I was doing the best I could. The director was amazing take after take. The most important shot was at the end to make sure I showed the pockets. Fun fact – these were my own shorts. My own stunts. My own ass and also that young director who gave me my first shot probably had no idea how much he helped me go HIGHER for the next 35 years. Also a fun fact – my ass ain’t that bouncy no more.”

Peter Kelamis

“It was amazing appearing in this last week’s episode of The Flash. Great Cast and Crew! Thanks!”

SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend (and frequent Louis photo supplier) Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she will contribute a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Oat Cookies

“I’m obsessed with these cookies! They are insanely delicious so I hope you all enjoy.
Happy baking, friends!”

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp egg replacer
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup gluten-free rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt (reduce salt if using salted peanut butter)
  • 1/4 cup mini vegan chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup natural smooth peanut butter
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F, prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add the egg replacer and water to a bowl and mix to combine. Set aside.
  3. Add the coconut, oats, coconut sugar, baking powder, sea salt and chocolate chips. Stir to combine.
  4. Add the peanut butter, vanilla and maple syrup to the same bowl as the egg replacer. Mix until combined and thick.
  5. Add the thick mixture to the dry ingredients and mix together. It will seem very dry and first but really get in there and mix well. I like to use my hands.
  6. Lightly wet your hands and begin to form 12 small balls and place on baking sheets. Once done, press the balls into cookies forming the edges.
  7. If there is left over chocolate chips just press them into the cookies.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes. They will come out delicate looking but will firm as they cool. The bottoms will be lightly browned. Enjoy!
