Welcome to the annual Birthday Edition of our monthly Ferreira Fest, where we check in with Louis Ferreira, his friends and chosen charities. We have a bunch of news, pictures, screen caps, our exclusive Reading Series and a brand new recipe for you to try out. Grab a slice of warm pineapple cake fresh from the oven and an age-appropriate cocktail at our virtual birthday buffet and come on in!

THE 2023 BIRTHDAY PROJECT

Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Birthday Project and sent a recipe for food or good wishes. We have met our fundraising goal! Thanks to you we’re able to provide free meals for an elder homeless man in Toronto for an entire month!

If you’d like to help out more, please check out the Haven Toronto Shop & Share Site.

The package with the carved wooden box and the cards is still en route to Vancouver. Due to inclement weather in a transfer hub it was delayed by a few days but Louis is expecting it and we hope it gets there safe and sound.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LOUIS!

Haven Toronto

There are three pillars on which Haven Toronto’s success is built; they are reducing barriers to food security, health care and housing. Record levels of client engagement in 2022 remind us of just how vital these supports are. A spike in the number of new clients reinforces that the need has never been greater.

Our monthly intake of new clients in 2022 was up 69% versus pre-pandemic numbers (2019). Compare that with the 2% to 3% percent increase in new clients that we historically experience year-over- year. Poverty and homelessness are at crisis levels. An internal survey last November revealed that 98% of clients partake in our Healthy Meals program. This is important as food is a gateway to other supports. Last year, we served over 83,000 meals, up over 100 percent compared to pre-pandemic numbers.

When clients come for a hot meal, we use that opportunity to get them in front of nurses and counsellors.
In 2022, our nurses and counsellors provided 19% more supports than the previous year. Housing and mental health supports were up 10%, and our foot clinic helped almost 7 times more clients. Our ability to meet the growing need for support is made possible through donations. We are grateful for your support and we see, first-hand, the difference your donation makes. You are our pillar. Thank you.

If our birthday project has inspired you, check out the Shop & Share site – anything you purchase there goes directly to an elder homeless man in need , no muss, no fuss.

From meals to daily necessities to clothing, to monthly donation systems, there is something for every budget.

Your purchase makes someone’s life better right away!

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

SCREEN CAPS

This month we have over 700 caps from the Missing Season 3 episode And the Walls Come Tumbling Down which first aired on July 17, 2005. In this episode Louis, who plays FBI Assistant Director John Pollock, gets to sink his teeth into some really good storylines.

Logline:
Jess has a vision that leads her and Nicole to discover a 10-year-old skeleton. When the body is identified, Pollack orders them off the case. Jess and Nicole continue to work on the case while trying to keep their work away from Pollack and trying to figure out why he’s so insistent that they can’t work on it. Meanwhile, Pollack’s wife Janice kicks him out.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!   by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 31: Lost! – A Dog! part 2 (continued)

Then
C-R-A-S-H! BANG!
“THE TRAP!
THE TRAP!” shouted Mark

The cans made a sound like a rocket
blasting off.

Then they heard nothing –
not a sound –
nothing.

To be continued next month!

Mika McKinnon

From the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences:
What is an opportunity or challenge that the geoscience community can take action on?
Mika McKinnon, science communication specialist and recipient of the E.R. Ward Neale Medal, shares her thoughts on the Canadian Science Publishing blog:
Geoscience and society: Small shifts to a better future
In this post, Mika McKinnon answers the question: What is an opportunity or challenge that the geoscience community can take action on?

Tiny milestones! Mika writes:
“This was my first scifi consult as a new parent. The smallest member of my household was very cooperative, napping deeply through an email chain on magma and eruption conditions.”
The Terraformers” by Annalee Newitz
The book is classified as Hopepunk – a sci-fi novel that melds serious tech with moral good. It’s a novel that questions our definition of the word “person” and features a cast of characters that includes a flying moose and a sentient commuter train that falls in love with a house cat.

And then there’s Twitter, and how a random question turns into a full-scale interview about being the science consultant on TV shows. Check out the full thread here (it’s actually ABOVE the post, so you need to scroll UP to read it!)

SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend (and frequent Louis photo supplier) Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she will contribute a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

Quinoa & Arugula Salad with Spiced Pecans

“This salad is so so so delicious, nuff said. :))”

Garlic and lemon Vinaigrette Ingredients:

3 tbsp white balsamic vinegar
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 small clove of garlic, minced
1 tsp Maple Syrup
sea salt, to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 Tbsp lemon juice

Method:

To prepare the vinaigrette, add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Alternatively, you can add the ingredients to a jar or other container, place a lid on the top and shake to combine.

Salad Ingredients:

2 cups quinoa, cooked
4 cups arugula
1 cup Spiced Pecans
1 cup snap peas, sliced in half
1 cup red pepper, diced
1 cup cherry tomatoes, cut in half
1/3 cup raisins
2 tbsp capers
sea salt, to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Method:

  1. For spiced pecans, toss with some sea salt, maple syrup and smoked paprika or spice of choice. Roast at 350°F for 7 to 10 minutes.
  2. For snap peas, blanch in boiling water for 20 seconds and then put them into an ice bath to stop the cooking process. This will make them nice and green, but they will still be crunchy.
  3. Place all of the salad ingredients into a bowl, add dressing and toss to combine.
