CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

Ability Online provides a safe, bully-free online environment for children, youth and young adults with disabilities. Here are their Core Values:

Inclusiveness
We welcome children/youth with all kinds of disabilities, illnesses, or other life challenges to be a part of our online community. We also have separate sections for parents and professionals who work with these children.

Accessibility
Our program is available 24/7 from any device with Internet access. The site itself tries to accommodate children of all abilities, allowing for access with specialized technology and/or software.

Free Access
Membership and access to the member pages is free. We recognize that our families have many financial demands and we want to be able to include everyone regardless of their financial status.

Safe & Protective
Through our safety policies and practices we provide a monitored and supportive online experience. All members are screened prior to being granted full access, and all personal data provided during registration is confidential. We also have zero tolerance for bullying and will restrict/remove member access if required.

Collaborative
We work closely with community partners, content specialists and our members to ensure that our content truly addresses member needs. Moreover, the community collaborations allow us to work together with our partners to reach more members, provide greater impact, and serve as a resource for their clients/service offerings.

While all those services are free to the clients they are costly to maintain, so please consider contributing to keep Ability Online available for those who really need it! Click on the logo below to donate.

Haven Toronto

One downtown Toronto drop-in centre is providing more basics to more people impacted by poverty, homelessness and isolation.

Open every day all year, Haven Toronto provides clients with healthy meals; showers and personal grooming products; laundry facilities; and access to an Emergency Clothing Room. Elder homeless men carry everything they own so they minimize what they have. As a result, every new season brings new challenges, especially when it comes to clothes. That’s when our Emergency Clothing Room comes to their aid. The drop-in center also offers free WIFI, access to computers, and a program whereby qualifying clients receive a free, entry-level mobile phone and service plan.

Winters in Toronto are rough, and many of Haven Toronto’s clients are in dire need of warm clothing. If you’re the kind of person who likes to know exactly where their donations go, HT’s Shop & Share site is for you! Everything you purchase there goes directly to an elder homeless man in need, and there’s something for every budget!

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

The Children’s Aid Foundation‘s Strategic Plan for 2020–2025 sets out the five strategic priorities that are guiding their efforts to improve the lives of children, youth, and families involved with the child welfare system.
Read more about it here or click on the image on the right or the infographic below.

You can always read up on the latest news, events and stories here.

The main website also has links for youth in care with lots of information on available support systems, as well as info on Fostering Community, a platform of curated resources for Canada’s youth from care community.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!   by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 30: Lost! – A Dog! Part 2 (continued)

To be continued next month!

Then he heard something.

“Mark! Mark!” he whispered.
“It’s back! It’s back!
Can you hear it?”

“Yes, I can” whispered Mark.
“What do you think it wants?
What can it be?
What does it sound like to you?”

“It sounds like a big man to me,”
answered Tom.
“SH! The sounds are coming closer!”

“I don’t like this clubhouse,”
Pat whispered. “I don’t like the sounds.”

“SH! SH! Pat!”

It was going around the clubhouse.

Ingrid Rogers

Ingrid has a new Instagram account!

“Hiii!! It’s been soooo long since I posted. Almost 20 months! I’ve missed connecting with you virtually but I’m back and have so much to share.

What a ride it’s been these last couple years. So many changes. I’ll share more in depth about the journey but here’s the highlights: after almost 30 years of being in front of the camera, I decided to step away from acting and focus more on producing with my husband. Some of the most satisfying moments of my life have been shared with other actors creating make believe.

There’s nothing like that joy of bringing a character to life and communicating thoughts and emotions with another actor but I’ve always found the pursuit of the job to be completely agonizing. When I got really honest with myself I recognized that since I was in high school I’ve been most intrigued by storytelling not acting. Producing allows me to pursue storytelling from a more empowered position.

From there I felt free to express myself in ways that I thought I had to inhibit because I was an actress. I embraced my gray hair and locked it baby. I LOVE my locs. I love them so much. Each strand is unique and tells my story. I’m so genuinely happy to express myself through my hair in this way.

To make things even more exciting, Rob and I decided to sell our house in LA and move to a farming community just outside the city. We bought a home on an acre of land and thought we’d have a three to four month renovation. That was in December 2021 and we’re still six weeks away from finally moving in. Three to four months turned into a massive twelve month renovation; four temporary moves, all our things in storage and basically glamping. Thank God we still have our sanity and love for each other. It’s been epic and I cannot wait for you to see what we created.

Twenty months ago I wanted to imagine and create new adventures and that’s truly what I’ve done. No idea where this is all gonna lead but I do know that the best is yet to come and I look forward to sharing it with you.”

Peter Kelamis

Peter appeared at the Comedy Zone at King’s Head on December 20.

“It’s back to Texas January 27-29, 2023.
See you soon, San Angelo!”

“Hey Birmingham, Alabama!
I will see you February 10th-12th, 2023 at KamiCon!”

Bradley Stryker

Bradley writes:

“A fun movie I did a while back.”

Bradley played Mike in Who is Christmas Eve? The movie originally aired on November 21, 2021.

Logline:
Eve was abandoned as a baby at Christmas. When she is unable to move on with her life because of the mystery, her boyfriend hires a private investigator to find her parents.

SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend (and frequent Louis photo supplier) Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she will contribute a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

White Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins

White chocolate chip banana muffins are definitely a sweet exception that I enjoy for breakfast.

These muffins are not only delicious and moist, they are also pretty easy and quick to make.

Happy baking friends!

Ingredients:

1 cup Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour
1/3 cup white chocolate chips
1/2 Tsp baking powder
1/2 Tsp baking soda
1/2 Tsp salt
2 heaping Tbsp cornstarch mixed with 3 tablespoons of water
1/2 cup coconut sugar
2 medium ripe bananas, blended in a food processor
1/2 Tsp vanilla
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 Tsp cinnamon

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F and put paper liners in each cup of your muffin pan. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the cornstarch and water until it has a thin watery consistency. It will be tacky and thick at first.
  4. Once the cornstarch water is mixed, add the sugar and whisk to combine. Whisk in the blended bananas, oil, vanilla and cinnamon. Mix until well combined.
  5. Next, sift in the flour mixture then add the white chocolate chips. Whisk until combined.
  6. Use an ice cream scoop to scoop the batter into each muffin cup in tin.
  7. Fill the cups almost to the top and then smooth the tops of the batter.
  8. Pop muffins in the center rack of the oven and bake for 25 minutes until the tops are golden, risen and springy when carefully poked.
  9. Remove from the oven and let sit in the pan for an additional 5 minutes.
  10. After 5 minutes, take the muffins out and let them cool completely on a wire cooling rack.
