Coming soon: New children’s book in partnership with The Wiggles!

Something in Common was created and written in collaboration with young people who have experienced child welfare in Canada.

The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this book are fictitious but have been shaped by the stories and experiences willingly shared by young people from care. The stories of children and youth in and from care are diverse and varied and the characters and narratives portrayed in Something in Common are not representative of all experiences. Thank you to all who participated in the creation of Something in Common! Our generous supporter AMJ Campbell will match each digital download of the Something in Common e-book with a $1 donation, up to a total of $30,000 CAD.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!   by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 26: Lost! – A Dog! Part 1

“Mommy! MR. MUGS IS LOST!
HE’S LOST! HE’S LOST!” Pat shouted.

“How do you know he’s lost?” asked Mother.
“Where did you look?”

“I looked around outside and in the rooms!”
Pat answered.
“He’s not here.
I can’t find him!”

“Ask the boys,”
said Mother.
“Maybe they saw him.
Don’t cry, Pat.
Someone will find him.”

To be continued next month!

Pat told Mark and Tom about Mr. Mugs.
“Don’t cry, Pat,” said Mark.
“He’ll come back.
Let’s go into the clubhouse and think.
I can think inside the clubhouse.”

They thought and thought
about Mr. Mugs. Then Mark said,
“This is what we should do.
Pat, you go and ask Cathy and your friends.
Tom, you go up our street.
That should do it. We’ll find that dog!”

Away they went.

Sawyer Ferreira

Sawyer writes:

“There’s nothing like healing your inner child. Nothing like ice cream on a park bench, or windows down driving. Summer’s coming to a close and I’ll confess it’s been a long one. (Tough breaks, mosquitoes, internal turmoil.) BUT when you’re on a swing, wind in your hair, friends’ laughter in your ears. The view is nothing but clear skies and sunshine. Remember that.”

Eric Banerd

While Eric is travelling in the Mediterranean his company Even Better Painting gave this house a full exterior makeover! For more examples and to book them for your next paint job visit their website!

Rob Munic

Rob writes:
“When I was a kid, my teachers wanted to put me on medication because I couldn’t sit still. Had a million thoughts at once coming in on all channels. I Wanted you to stand up and sing and act and write skits because I could understand that – but I couldn’t do math, algebra? No way. All the numbers were just scrambled in my head. As this went on, Camp counselors, certain adults were always telling me to sit down. Shut up. Be quite. You’re too loud. And my personal favorite which I will never forget, “Do you have to be so passionate about everything you do?! Well the simple answer then-and now is “F*ck, yes.” I was told time and time again, “You trying to create a revolution!? It will never work.” I wasn’t trying to revolt for the sake of chaos. Yeah, I was a handful. I was trying desperately to express what was inside of me – but couldn’t articulate it with my wildly creative ADHD brain firing off in all directions at once. So then this shirt appears in the mail from my Sis. And at first I didn’t see it. Then I looked again and there it was! The granular motivation I was trying to get out and To put into the world, is right here on this shirt.

Inside of every Revolution is LOVE. Lead with it. Look for it. Hold on to it and then CREATE your revolution. And yes, this is my real hair – long on its way to being donated in two more years when it reaches max length for Locks of Love and to my sis, thanks for the killer Tee and reminder: we are all here for the love.”

Peter Kelamis

Peter writes:

“Next stop on the Klam Con Train… San Diego! October 15-16, 2022.”

SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend (and frequent Louis photo supplier) Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she will contribute a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

Mixed Gourmet Mushroom Creamy Pasta

This pasta is soooo creamy and delicious you won’t be able to stop eating it! Packed with fresh assorted mushrooms with different textures that every bite is one to look forward too. Yumm!

Ingredients for creamy sauce:
1 cup cashews soaked in boiling hot water for 30 minutes-1 hour
¾ cup water or mushroom broth
¼ cup nutritional yeast
1 clove garlic
Salt and pepper to taste

Sauteed Mushrooms:
1 Tablespoon vegan butter or sub for oil
Box of assorted gourmet mushrooms
1 Tablespoon lemon juice about ½ lemon, juices
truffle salt to taste
Parsley, chopped
Grape tomatoes, sliced
1 Tablespoon truffle oil (to drizzle)

Method:
First, add the cashews to a bowl with boiling hot water and soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour. You can also add the cashews to a bowl of cold water, cover, and soak in the fridge for 6-8 hours.

While the cashews are soaking, cook the pasta according to instructions on the package. Once cooked, strain and set aside.

While the pasta is cooking, add the vegan butter to a frying pan on medium high. Once the butter begins to sizzle, add the mushrooms and lemon juice to the pan and stir. Sautéed until natural juices appear. Add the tomatoes and parsley and stir. Sauté until mushrooms are beginning to brown and liquid has evaporated.

Make the cream sauce. First, strain the soaked cashews. Then, add the soaked cashews, water or mushroom broth, nutritional yeast, garlic, sat and pepper to a blender. Blend until a thick and smooth sauce forms.

Add the pasta and sauce to mushrooms and stir. Drizzle the truffle oil and stir. Serve and enjoy! Yumm!
