CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

At Ability Online we’d like to express our thanks to everyone who attended last Friday’s virtual concert We are so grateful for the performers sharing their incredible talent with us. We’re looking forward to launching another “Songs for Smiles” virtual concert in the near future.

This amazing virtual celebration event made a lasting impact on everyone who participated. Everyone who attended this amazing “Songs for Smiles” virtual celebration event departed with a lasting memory. We had a blast putting this event together for you.

September 30, 2021 was Truth and Reconciliation Day. Forcible removal of children from their families and communities over an extended period wiped out indigenous languages and traditions. In June 2021, 751 unmarked graves containing roughly 6,500 missing children were found. This day honors the survivors of these schools. Investigating how and why such murders were allowed, as well as assisting Indigenous families and communities in their healing process.

Ability Gives

Ability Gives is the equipment fundraising arm of Ability Online. From time to time we have families in need of support, who are not comfortable profiling their child for donation. We respect this, but still want and need to help these families.

Obstacles
Whether it is for cultural, religious, or other personal reasons, there are some families who choose to keep their child’s disability private. Not everyone is comfortable sharing information online. And that is totally understandable.

Solutions
By making a donation to this general fund, you will be supporting children with disabilities who need equipment/adaptive aids to improve the quality of their lives. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Goal
Help us raise $5000 to support our families! Click here to participate.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit children and youth with disabilities especially hard. Many of them have compromised immune system, so Ability Online’s safe, monitored and bully-free environment is a lifeline for them. Please help support this vital service by clicking on the logo below.

Project Limelight

Due to the global pandemic, all programs at Project Limelight are currently on hold.

Project Limelight is a non-profit performing arts program in East Vancouver offering residents ages 8 to 15 years old of the Downtown Eastside, Strathcona and Mount Pleasant programming at no cost. Project Limelight provides youth with a safe place to build an artistic community alongside professional actors, directors, dancers, singers, costume designers, filmmakers and musicians. As part of their commitment to the community, nutritious meals and snacks are provided to every child at each workshop and rehearsal.

Help give the organization a running start when programs are once again possible and safe by clicking on the logo below.

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto is Canada’s only daytime drop-in shelter for elder homeless men, but they are also tireless advocates for policy change supporting affordable housing, elder care and senior issues at large.

Elder homeless men walk 15km a day, on average, to access supports vital to their health and wellbeing. How far will you go to help? Walk, hike, run or bike this Walktober. Any distance. Any day.
Haven Toronto invites you to Walktober, a virtual walk in support of elder homeless men. During the month of October, walk, hike, run or bike, any day, any distance. Set a goal and challenge yourself. Invite family and friends to join your team or support you with a donation towards your goal. Proceeds help reduce barriers – and steps – to accessing programs and supports vital to the health and wellbeing of elder homeless men, including health care, housing and food security.

A message from Haven Toronto’s four-legged ambassador Waska:

“Feeling thankful for everyone who has supported my Walktober journey so far. This weekend I’m out of the city with family, taking walks in the forest and chasing tons of squirrels! Another 5 km down in support of my friends.

Follow me as I continue to take steps at Walktober!”

Each winter, our terrific partners at Socks for Souls donate hundreds of pairs of warm socks for our clients. This World Homeless Day they are raising funds to purchase 40,000 pairs for the homeless community. Help them achieve their goal!

Foot For Thought: The Importance Of Foot Health
A big problem for elder homeless men is shoes that are too small. Over 40% of homeless men wear shoes that do not fit, that are more than one size too large or too small for their feet. This leads to even bigger problems with serious consequences.

Winter is almost here and homeless people suffer greatly when temperatures drop. If you want to make an immediate difference in a homeless person’s life, please shop at Haven Toronto’s Shop & Share site: anything you purchase there goes directly to an elder homeless man in need.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

SHOWS NEWS: RIVERDALE

The Wrap has posted a quick plot summary of Louis’ recent episode in the series Riverdale.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Riverdale episode titled “Citizen Lodge.”)

The CW’s “Riverdale” dove into the past of its biggest bad, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), this week with a long-awaited origin story for the villain to explain, well, why he’s such a villain. For this special installment, Mark Consuelos’ real-life son, Michael Consuelos, reprised his role as Young Hiram, which he first took on for the Season 3 episode “The Midnight Club.”

The episode, titled “Citizen Lodge” sees present-day Hiram tell Reggie (Charles Melton) the story of his youth, flashing back to the days when young Hiram was Jaime Luna (Michael Consuelos) and his father, Javier (played by Mark Consuelos) moved the family to Riverdale in search of the precious metal palladium.

Jackie shared two pictures this time, including a cartoon wishing everyone a Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

SCREEN CAPS

This month we have 952 screen caps from Louis’ first big series Urban Angel, where he played a Montreal newspaper investigative reporter named Victor Torres. In season 1 episode 4 Old Boys the newspaper’s publisher and staff are unsettled by rumors of a hostile takeover by Montreal financier, Claude Cormier. Following a tip, Victor probes health problems reported at an electrical parts plant owned by Cormier. Moorcraft and Francine want the story badly and pair Victor with experienced environmental reporter Denise Vincent. They don’t get along, but they’re attracted to each other. Meanwhile, Victor and Marrone organize a reunion of the group home. When the party turns ugly, Victor realizes his past is behind him. He teams up with Denise and discovers the “health problems” were a false story planted by Cormier to undermine Moorcraft.

You can watch the episode in Ferreira Fest 131 or on YouTube.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

cover image https://www.louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series/

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.

Here is this month’s chapter.

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. And if you find yourself in Vancouver visit her studio and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:

Because of the Pandemic I haven’t been doing henna on anyone and frankly, I wasn’t motivated to either. Recently I was contacted by a local school which wanted me back for their first fundraising event since covid began, and I have to admit I almost declined. I had some anxiety around being in such close proximity to multiple people and mostly children who cannot be vaccinated. In the end I absolutely loved being back in the saddle and thoroughly enjoyed the energy of all the excited children who received a henna. Life is starting to become more normal.

And that, dear Friends, is about it for this month! Thanks for visiting often! Be sure to follow us on Twitter for all the Louis news you can handle and TV reminders!
