We have lots of goodies this month, so grab a refreshing pineapple cocktail at our virtual bar and come on in!

Nothing is currently scheduled in the Tuesday Night Live series, but keep checking the Facebook Page for upcoming events.

Project Limelight made another movie called The Girl With No Super Powers

Who wouldn’t want to go to Susan Stupendous Elementary School?!!

While talent may be distributed evenly, opportunity is not, and you can do your share to ensure that underprivileged inner-city kids have access to a high-quality free performing arts education. Just click on the logo below to make a donation.

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto, a drop-in center for elder homeless men, has launched a travel website, OpenAirbnb.com, designed to educate consumers on the issue of homelessness in Toronto.

OpenAirbnb.com invites people to “Sleep under the stars”, an alternative to traditional camping and glamping. No tent. No air mattress. Just a sleeping bag beneath you and the stars above.

On OpenAirbnb.com, consumers believe that they can sleep at popular and unique outdoor locations around Toronto, like Cherry Beach, Dundas Square and alongside the Don Valley Parkway. They can select their preferred location based on an array of features typical of a travel site, including ‘Heart of the City’, ‘Pet Friendly’ ‘Shared Accommodations’ and ’Near Restaurants, Shopping and Theatres’.

In just a click or two, online shoppers realize that sleeping at any one of these locations is not safe and not wise. You’re exposed and you’re vulnerable. No one should be sleeping here. Not by choice. And certainly not by lack of choice.

Yet every night there are 8000 people who are sleeping on Toronto streets and in city shelters. 75 percent are male and 30 percent are over the age of 50.

In Toronto, 93 percent of those who are homeless wish they had a place of their own. The waitlist for ‘Rent-Geared-to-Income’ housing is over 8 years. The length of stay in a shelter for adults 50 and older is two times as long as youth and young adults.

Through OpenAirbnb.com, Haven Toronto hopes to increase awareness and reduce the stereotypes of homelessness.

75 percent of homelessness is the result of a loss of job, workplace injury, change to family status (ie. death or divorce), and health issues.

For 85 years, Haven Toronto has been a sanctuary for elder homeless men. Serving thousands, Haven Toronto sees an average of 400 clients a day. 30 percent of new clients are over the age of 60.

In addition to providing nutritious meals three times daily, emergency clothing, laundry and showers, Haven Toronto offers onsite counsellors, crisis and housing support and nurses.

Haven Toronto first opened in 1933, founded by May Birchard, a Toronto school board trustee, city Councillor and social activist.

  • HT BBQ

Haven Toronto, The United Way, Youth in Policing, The Toronto Police LGBTQ-ISN and Moss Park Coppers threw their big annual BBQ for Toronto’s elder homeless men, and it was a huge success!

With 100% of their clients experiencing food insecurity, providing food is one of Haven Toronto’s priorities. Volunteers play a big role in their food service efforts.

The Haven Toronto E Newsletter for August 2018 is now available online – click the cover page thumbnail to access and read it. As the summer winds down there are still plenty of hot days ahead. Browse Haven Toronto’s excellent Shop & Share site, where anything you purchase is going directly to an elder homeless man in need, instead of cluttering your own home. There is no more direct way of making a difference! From water bottles to clothing to nutritious meals – there is something for everyone, and for every budget!

If you wish to make a donation to help with wherever it is needed most at the moment, please use our very own donations web page by clicking on the logo below. Please note that the site is listed under Haven Toronto’s former name, The Good Neighbours Club.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Did you know that 68% of homeless youth have been in foster care? This is a truly alarming number, and a sad outlook for foster kids. The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada works hard to give those disadvantaged kids a fighting chance so they don’t end up in this terrible situation.

SCREENCAPS

This month we have 378 screencaps from the Season 3 Motive episode The Glass House. Here’s a brief recap:

The victim: Peter Glass, an employee for a digital security consulting firm. He is survived by a wife, full-time homemaker Olivia Glass, and a sixteen year old daughter, Sophie Glass. The killer: Wayne Hobbs, a general contractor, one of whose latest jobs was to build a backyard deck for the Glasses. Peter is eventually identified as the murder victim through DNA of his dismembered body parts strewn throughout various locations in the city. In interviewing those that knew Peter, the homicide detectives find that he was considered an anti-social man, who controlled every aspect of Olivia and Sophie’s lives. Regardless, Olivia and Sophie still seemed to love him yet be somewhat scared of him at the same time. The murder investigation turns into a concurrent kidnapping investigation when they find that Wayne has abducted Sophie. In searching through Wayne’s belongings, the detectives find that Wayne has a penchant for girls exactly Sophie’s type…   (adapted from IMDb)

The episode also stars our friend Jen Spence as a neighbor of the Glass family.

THE NEW READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – PEEK IN PLEASE

The third monthly reading series is Mr. Mugs – Peek In Please by Martha Kambeitz, Denise Burns and Josephine Proctor.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

You can listen to the book readings under the Reading Series Tab.
This month’s issue is chapter 8 of Mr. Mugs – Peek In Please.

VERSUS is described as “WrestleMania meets Debate Club”, and Mika represented the deserts. Here she is with host Dustin Growick, celebrating her victory.

Find out more about VERSUS events here.

Want to watch Mika clobber more debate partners with her seemingly unending knowledge of doomsday science? Come see her at Dragon Con in Atlanta on Labor Day weekend!

Eugene Lipinski

Eugene’s latest movie Siberia, starring Keanu Reeves, is playing in movie theatres now. Eugene plays one of the bad Russians – a type he excels at playing, despite being a really nice person in real life!

Here’s a snippet of a review from Common Sense Media:

“Slow but intelligent, moody, and mature, this thriller isn’t exactly thrilling, yet it’s hypnotic in the way it zooms in on little messy, unexpected human behaviors. It’s all about the gray areas. Written by the talented Scott B. Smith (A Simple Plan, The Ruins), Siberia has the advantage of plunking viewers right in the middle of a story that’s been going on for a while; in that way, it’s a little like spy movies from the 1960s and ’70s. Lucas Hill — played by Reeves at his reassuring, man-of-few-words best — is a longtime veteran, an expert at his job. As he deftly handles guns or assembles untraceable, disposable phones, his blank expression could mean anything. It’s fascinating to watch him to find out more.”

Troy Mundle

Troy’s recent movie Bucketheads: A Star Wars Movie will premiere at DragonCon 2018 in Atlanta on Labor Day weekend! It will screen on Sunday September 2nd at 11:30am in the Hyatt Learning Center on the Ballroom Level (check the map here).

If you’ve always wanted to meet Troy, be sure to go to the screening – Troy will be there!

Here’s the most recent Bucketheads promo shot…

… and here’s Troy with his co-star Kat Ruston.

Patrick Gilmore

Sadly, Patrick had to cancel his Dragon Con appearance due to work commitments. We’re hoping to see him there next year, or another future con!

Alex Appel

Alex’ new film Modern Persuasion based on a Jane Austen book “Persuasion” is now in pre-production. Alex is directing the movie!

Logline: A single woman focused on her career in New York is forced to deal with the aftermath of a failed relationship when an ex-boyfriend is hired by her company.

Deadline.com has a detailed article on the new movie – check it out! Alex will also be at Dragon Con this year.
