THE NEW READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – PEEK IN, PLEASE

The third monthly reading series is Mr. Mugs – Peek In, Please by Martha Kambeitz, Denise Burns and Josephine Proctor.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Mr. Mugs
is the title character in a series of children’s books written by Martha Kambeitz and Carol Roth and published by Ginn and Company (now part of Prentice Hall). Mr. Mugs was an Old English Sheepdog who lived with two children, Pat and Cathy. These readers were used in Canadian elementary schools in the 1970s and early 1980s to teach reading. There were 3 different series (with seven levels within each series) of “Mr. Mugs” books: “Ginn Integrated Language Program”; “Light and Life Reading Series”; and “Sharing Points in Language Arts”. While two titles were published in hardcover, the rest of the “Mr. Mugs” titles were published in softcover.

To learn more about the Mr. Mugs books please visit the Meet Mr. Mugs Page. You can also watch dramatic readings of two additional Mr. Mugs books there.

You can listen to the book readings on the Reading Series Page.

This month we start with Chapter 1 of Mr. Mugs – Peek In, Please.

IN MEMORY OF OUR PETS

Mika McKinnon’s pet hedgehog died January 5th.

Little hedgehog died exactly one month shy of his 5th birthday, an average duration within the 4-6 years expected for domestic hedgehogs, but a life filled with adventures. He went quickly and will be sorely missed.

Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it merely changes form. Our friends live on in the stories we tell. My tiniest friend is truly immortal from how often his adventures spark storytime.

Little hedgehog moved in with me when he was 6 weeks old, just weened from his mum. While initially aloof, by the time we got through his painful quillings, he was willing to concede friendship.

Learning to give him manicures was a lesson in negotiating consent — no way could I trim those tiny nails without permission from my spiky deathball. Hedgehog manicurist: Evidence of patience, persuasion, attention to detail, fine motor skills, effectively targeted bribery.

Providing little hedgehog with safe spaces to retreat where I wouldn’t pester him was key to building trust. As were mealworm bribes. So many mealworm bribes.

Hedgehogs anoint — lick something to steal its scent, then generate a frothy spit to spread on themselves. For my tiny friend, he was particularly fond of stealing the scent of a 1970s Gibson bass. Little hedgehog always resented when I undid his hard work with bathtime. (I admit the time he chose to reek of a potato chip I was giggling too hard and let him keep the scent for a day.)

Wee friend was
an epic marathoner… He made me buy him 12 wheels and ran over 10,000 kilometers in his lifetime. To match him footstep-for-footstep, I would’ve needed to run 1-2 marathons a day every day. That distance is an underestimate — he frequently had free roam of my home to run without being tracked by odometer.

Tiny friend had way more personality than I expected. I was anticipating effectively a pet rock with a heartbeat, or a mobile cactus. I got a spikeball of attitude. Hedgehogs are crepuscular, so tiny friend was most active at dawn and dusk. My consolation prize for working 6am east coast rocket launches or covering European press briefings was extra cuddle time.

Tiny friend once executed a jailbreak while I was on a phone interview, leading to a thoroughly unprofessional interruption when I was distracted by him running past and lost the thread of conversation.

Hedgehogs are difficult pets, with demanding special needs and subtle in their affections. I learned a lot
taking care of him

Goodbye, tiny friend. You were incredibly daring for a prey animal, made brave by faith that I’d keep you safe. Thank you for trusting me.

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. Please visit her website for lots more photos and fascinating facts and information about this ancient artform. And if you find yourself in Vancouver – visit her studio and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:

Blessingways are a gathering of friends and family of the mother to be to celebrate her pregnancy. I feel so fortunate to be able to do the belly henna while listening to story telling and appreciation that flows during the party. It’s especially challenging though when someone tells a funny story and causes the mother to laugh while I am decorating her belly. You can imagine trying to paint on a jiggling canvas…

ODDS & ENDS

We’re experiencing some issues with the sound files on the web site; a large number of sound clips are not accessible on the server. Please be patient while those sound files are being re-uploaded or embedded from external sites.

Likewise, the screencaps collection is still in the process of migrating to a new share site. It is a very large number of images, so the project will take several more months to complete.

Thanks for understanding. As always, if you are in dire need of those documents, please contact us.

And that, dear Friends, is about it for this month! Thanks for visiting often! Be sure to follow us on Twitter for all the Louis news you can handle and TV reminders!

1. Visit the Forum and start a discussion or participate in an existing one. Posting is easy and hassle-free, and nobody there will send you spam or unwanted emails.

2. Leave a note in the Guestbook. Guestbook notes will get a response via email if available.

3. Contact or any other staff member. Everyone is listed on the Contact Page. If you have any questions that you need answered, email is the way to go!

We are always looking for volunteers who want to contribute, and there are perks associated with being a correspondent or staff member!

Please remember: all content of Ferreira Fest and indeed this entire website is copyright protected. That’s what the note on the bottom of each page says. It means that you should never re-post anything you find here elsewhere. If you absolutely must do so please contact first so we can work things out. We all work for free here, and we all work very hard, and it’s just not fair if you steal stuff and claim it as your own. Your mom/ dad/ parental unit/ teacher already told you as much. Please play by the rules.

We hope to see you all next month!
