THE GALA

Metro Toronto Convention Centre
South Building Halls F & G

In 2017, along with our generous partners and committed donors, we successfully raised a total of $3.3 million from the event and generous donations to the Teddy Bear Fund, established as a tribute to the Foundation Gala. Funds raised supported the critical and urgent needs of children and youth in the community.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada Gala – Teddy Bear Affair is widely recognized as one of Toronto’s most highly anticipated black-tie galas. Revenue generated from the event is used to support the most pressing needs of vulnerable children in our community.

This year's gala is sold out but you can still donate.

You can always read the latest news in the weekly newsletter The Buzz.

THE NEW READING SERIES: MR. MUGS - PEEK IN PLEASE

The third monthly reading series is Mr. Mugs - Peek In Please by Martha Kambeitz, Denise Burns and Josephine Proctor.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

You can listen to the book readings on the Reading Series Page.
Here is this month's chapter.

Mika McKinnon

Mika is a regular guest at Dragon Con. Here's a list of the many panels she moderated or was featured in as a speaker.

Mika and Bea ran into each other at several panels as they share many interests such as debunking Post-Apocalyptic Pseudoscience.

Mika recorded a video clip exclusively for Ferreira Fest, so say hi to Mika, Moose and a hefty chunk of lava:

Since we're in the middle of hurricane season, have you ever thought about why people DON'T evacuate when one of those giant storms is about to hit? Mika will give you a whole new way to look at the issue. As always, it's not as easy as it seems. Read her article on Scientific American here. It is a true eye-opener.

Some time ago Mika's late pet hedgehog was featured on the @observatorycats feed. The cats living at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico have suffered badly after hurricane Maria devastated the island. Now they need your help! Please visit their GoFundMe Page and donate what you can to pay for veterinary care, vaccinations, spays and neuters. You can even adopt an Observatory Cat!

Eugene Lipinski

Eugene's recent movie Three Seconds is slated to hit the festival scene sometime early next year. Stay tuned for more info!

Troy Mundle

Troy's latest movie Bucketheads won the Spirit of Dragon Con Award right out of the gate!

Watch the Bucketheads trailer here!

Sadly, Troy didn't make it to Dragon Con after all, but some of the production staff did. Bucketheads was screened at the Film Festival for a very appreciative audience. It's a beautifully done movie in stunning surroundings, telling the heartrending story of a moment in the life of a storm trooper who suffers a crash landing in the deep forest of a planet, and who has a surprise encounter that will possibly change his life.

It could easily be seen as the pilot of a TV series that explores pivotal moments in the lives of those generally faceless soldiers, but as Troy confirmed the point of this movie was to tell the story of one moment in the life of one storm trooper.

Stay tuned for more info on where you can watch the movie!

Dennis Heaton

Dennis will be at the Vancouver International Film Fest in the Meet the Showrunners event. Only a few tickets are still available - get yours here.

Here is a fabulous new in-depth interview with Dennis about his new show The Order. Principal photography on the series wrapped in July, and it will air on Netflix. A premiere date has not been set yet.

Patrick Gilmore

Here's why Patrick had to miss Dragon Con this year: he's been cast in the new comedy series Jann!

Production has begun on the inaugural season of CTV’s new original comedy series Jann. Starring multi-platinum award-winning Canadian singer, songwriter, broadcaster, and author Jann Arden as a fictionalized version of herself, the six-episode comedy series takes viewers on Jann’s quest for renewed fame in the wake of a waning career, while also dealing with the obligations and pressures of her real life.

#smug sip!

Alex Appel

Sadly, Alex also didn't make it to Dragon Con this year - after filming her new project Modern Persuasion based on the book by Jane Austen she needed a break. We'll be sure to meet up with her again next year!

Sawyer Ferreira

This summer Sawyer got to visit one of the iconic landmarks of the northern latitudes - an inunnguaq.

Inuksuk (also spelled inukshuk, plural inuksuit) is a figure made of piled stones or boulders constructed to communicate with humans throughout the Arctic. Traditionally constructed by the Inuit, inuksuit are integral to Inuit culture and are often intertwined with representations of Canada and the North. A red inuksuk adorns the flag of Nunavut. In Inuktitut, the term inuksuk means "to act in the capacity of a human." It is an extension of the word inuk meaning "a human being." Inuksuit have been found adjacent to archaeological sites dating from 2400 to 1800 BCE in the Mingo Lake region of southwest Baffin Island. While stone figures resembling human forms are often referred to as inuksuk, such figures are actually known as inunnguaq.

Jen also participated in The Suitcase Project: A collaboration with Kayla Isomura.

The Suitcase Project asks yonsei and gosei (fourth and fifth generation Japanese Canadians and Americans) what they would pack if uprooted from their homes in a moment’s notice.
While these descendants of the internment and incarceration may never have to endure the same forced uprooting as their ancestors, Kayla Isomura’s work examines how they, and those descended from families who experienced other forms of discrimination, remain affected by this history today through a series of photographs, short films and interviews.
Over the course of nearly three months, more than 80 subjects ranging in age and background shared their stories from cities in British Columbia, Canada and Washington, USA.

Peter Kelamis

Zilla is thrilled to have Peter back home!
After a long absence traveling and doing cons he was sorely missed by his pup...

Criz Alvarez did a new interview with Peter about his role on Stargate Universe and what he's been up to since then.

We met up with Peter at Dragon Con this year - a short video clip will be posted in an upcoming Ferreira Fest! Peter did several Stargate panels, and he also hosted the Don S. Davis Memorial Charity Auction for all things Stargate, where an autographed headshot of Louis also found a new home, raising money for this year's good cause Literacy Action.

Bradley Stryker

Bradley will appear in an episode of Heartland; he will play Tony in episode 6.

He was also just cast in the Netflix series Lost in Space!

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. Please visit her website for lots more photos and fascinating facts and information about this ancient artform. And if you find yourself in Vancouver - visit her studio and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:
"I get asked to attend many pre-birthing celebrations that are usually set for about a couple of weeks before the baby is born. This is a good time to get a henna done because the belly is so large now and gives me ample surface area.
On this occasion I arrived to a backyard party with a mother who had started to go into labour that day! She still wanted her henna and asked if I didn’t mind doing this while she laboured.
So I had a bit of a challenge, because she was having contractions every few minutes making my canvas quite unsteady... I did find it challenging and don’t think this is my best work. But considering the circumstances I think it’s not so bad... I finished in record time and the last few dots were placed just as she was being hurried to the hospital to give birth. All her friends continued to party in the backyard."
